You’re entitled to my opinion….

You know, I don’t rant that much anymore.  It’s not that I don’t have stuff to comment on, but it’s just that I feel like I’m shouting at the wind.  And that wind is full of hot air from everyone else that’s ranting their asses off.  Seems like a fruitless effort to fight against that, you know?

But “resist we much….”

Have you noticed that everyone has an opinion these days?  And on every little issue?  I used to celebrate that.  I thought an involved populace was what was needed to have substantive debate and hopefully good policy making in our society.  I could never have forseen the actual consequences….

You see, opinions have taken the place of facts.  Opinions have even taken the place of laws.  What is considered “true” or “legal” is subject to popular favor rather than what can be judged impartially and objectively.  That is, too much emotion exists in places that are supposed to be dispassionate.

And look at the result — you have Supreme Court Justices commenting on how popular their stance is on a given law rather than reading the actual statute.  You have media organizations saying that scientific theories must be true because the majority of people in a poll agree with the position.

When judges and scientists find themselves tailoring their attitudes to public sentiment, they have turned their backs on their professions.  And they fall into a hole that they won’t escape from.  You can’t be objective and popular at the same time.  If you want to be popular, go on American Idol….
